Fiction Project

Information for Monday 15th April 2013.

Assessment Task 5: Inspire Film Festival

1: Pitch your proposal - Ideally I would like this conducting this week - Monday or Tuesday AM. If not it needs to be conducted the following week - 23rd April. It can be either a PowerPoint presentation, a discussion with visual imagery or a video pitch (Kick-starter style). Additionally, for your word press sites, you will need a paper based proposal/treatment (available on this blog) that is completed in full.

2: Pre-Production/production/post-production - Please make sure that you are submitting the required evidence. You cannot just submit the video. The brief (on moodle) specifically lists the evidence toy need to submit. Make sure that you can provide some evidence for each of the italicised sub headings. If you do not, you will not have sufficient evidence to meet the grading criteria of the unit, as some of you have already encountered with the editing unit during semester 1. Listed below is the evidence required:

Be able to devise and pre-produce moving image fiction productions

Devise: subject idea; format; genre; style; audience; intended aim; budget, eg research costs, crew costs, travel, accommodation, subsistence, contingency

Pre-production: roles and responsibilities; proposals; script; shooting script; production schedule; production meeting minutes; call sheets; locations; recce report; risk assessments; health and safety

Logistics: time management; feasibility, deadlines; booking actors; acquiring properties; crewing; studio use; designing sets; building sets

Legal and ethical considerations: clearances and permissions; privacy; consent; release forms; filming in public

Be able to manage production and post-production for moving image fiction productions
Production: shots and sequences, eg one shot, two shot; camera movement; white balance; monitoring levels; environment, eg studio, location, public spaces; sound, eg additional dialogue recording, sound effects, music; sound levels; mixing

Production management: monitoring progress; identifying and solving problems; production organisation; logistics management; communication; coordination, eg crew, director, producer, scriptwriter, editor, sound designer

Post-production: log appropriate media; prepare edit decision list; sound design, eg sound effects, music, Foley; editing the image (to create narrative, to convey meaning, to illustrate subject, synthesis of image and audio

Furthermore, It looks as though the Inspire Film Festival is not running this year - Typical.

Therefore , I'm looking at entering the work into the Short Cinema Competition, which is held in Leicester. I'll post more information when I have it.

3 more shorts

Boy and Bicycle...directed by Ridley Scott and featuring his late brother Tony. This was filmed whilst Ridley was still a student, so it's quite interesting to see this in light of what he has achieved since.

Again, this was selected for the Cinema 16 British Shorts DVD

Who's My Favourite Girl

Another British Short available on Cinema 16 British Shorts DVD.

Brown Paper Bag

Another BAFTA winning short film

Brown Paper Bag from L'Coco Web Design Ltd on Vimeo.

Je t'aime John Wayne

A short film that pays homage to French New Wave cinema. Available on the Cinema 16 British Shorts DVD. Also it might be useful for the film studies work you are doing with John.

Short Film Information

A good document that discusses and explores contemporary short films.

Please read as it makes some good points and is usable for your own research/planning etc...

Also if you've not seen Paperman (Disney, 2012) here's a link so that you can watch it...well worth a look.

Group Presentation - Short Film Textual Analysis

In groups of 2 or 3, not four (as stated in the worksheet), "prepare presentations on the textual analysis of a short film of your own choosing. The presentation will commence with an uninterrupted screening and you might then wish to go through the short film using the pause button. All members of the group must speak and the presentation (after the screening) should last for no longer than 10 minutes, so please make your points succinctly."

Use the CINEMATOGRAPHY worksheet, and these EDITING and SOUND worksheets to help you in your analysis...

Use this as a guide - worksheet

Inspire film Festival - Short Film

Some early reading on your next practical assignment, which we start next Monday.

To Help you with your assignment I've uploaded timeline sheet on the history of short film.

Task 1 (For Monday 8th April)

If you have an opportunity then you could start this early (you should use this as evidence for fiction production) but we will look at it on Monday in more detail.

Short Film Analysis Worksheet - LINK HERE

Cinematography Worksheet - LINK HERE

Using the following worksheets analyse the following films. You should watch all of them but you only need to complete each form for 3 of the short films.

Doodlebug, dir. Christopher Nolan.

George Lucas in Love, dir. Joe Nussbaum.

Heartstrings, dir. Rhiannon Evans.

Vincent, dir. Tim Burton.

The Camera, dir. Peter Lewis

The Lunch Date, dir. Adam Davidson

Blood and Chips, dir. Ryan Phillips

Additionally, for this task, you need to create a short film. You can work in small teams but try to keep your groups to a maximum of 3. You can work individually if you want but please utilise other members of your group to help you make your short films.

There are a few constraints you need to additionally adhere to.

1) You must pick one from each of the three categories in this document - LINK HERE
2) Try to keep the short between 3 to 7 minutes - if it's longer you may run out of time.
3) maximum of 3 in a group
4) You a responsible for submitting in the "Inspire Festival" - if it's not running then we will consider an alternative.
